Running Man Challenge

Room 23 challenged all of the Year 4 classes, plus Mr Aukett to do a Running Man Challenge.

We invited Mr Aukett to take part in this with us and he happily agreed

Skipathon

In week 9 the year 4 classrooms all had their Skipathon. There were lots of activities that children participated  in . The activities were double dutch  inside outside inside backwards skipping and more. Everyone had a lot of fun  participated this was a very good idea the money went to the people who have heart disease if you ask me i think this is a good cause.

Now I will be interviewing some students for their feedback.

Amberly: I liked helping out with the double dutch and i loved the activities.

Mikayla: I liked all the activities I think that the activities were all right for the age  

Bruno: I liked the activities and the practising  for it. 

Hamish: I liked the idea of the skipathon and I like skipping.

Jonathan: It was fun and it kept me active.

This idea was to keep us active and is good for the heart.

The event was held on Friday in Week 9 of Term 2

Zebra Art

Miss Steptoe brought a piece of art to show the class what we were doing for art. We read a book about animals in the museum.  At night the animals climb out of there cages and go CRAZYYYYYY!!!!! 

We connected the art that Miss Steptoe brought with Room 22 and the book.  We had to draw a realistic Zebra. First we sketched the Zebra on our whiteboards. Then we started to sketch it in our books. We are still practicing in our books. 

When we have a realistic Zebra we will splash dye on it with a straw. First we will hold the straw in the dye. Then we will hold your thumb on the top of  the straw. Next we will pull the straw out of the dye but we keep our thumbs on the straw.

Then we put the straw over the sketched drawing. Next take your  thumb of the top of the straw. The paint will splatter all over the sketch and make the first blob of dye. Then you continue doing  that until you have about four-five blobs of dye. We are finished with the artwork.

Here is a pic of the artwork that Miss Steptoe brought in. That is how our art is going to look like when it is finished.

Year 4 Swimming Sports

The 2016 Year 4 Swimming Sports took place at the Meadowbank School pool. The first event, announced by Mr. Ratcliffe, was the girls non-competitive backstroke.The audience were cheering on every team competitor that went shooting down the pool like a silver bullet. The second event was the boys non-competitive backstroke. Zooming through the water, they raced at the speed of light.

The next incredible race was non competitive freestyle for girls. These girls were on fire! They finished in hardly any time at all. The next event was the amazing, outstanding boys non competitive freestyle! It was so loud that it  hurt our ears and nearly shook the ground.  When the event was complete, the next race was the kickboard for girls. The event ended excellent. The following race was the boys kickboard. They were very full of courage, and whatever they did, they didn’t give up. And because of this, they made it to the end.

The awesome event awaiting was the girls competitive backstroke.When the time came, the next thing we knew was waves streaking, crowds cheering, and competitors successfully reaching the finish. The race that took place a few seconds later was the boys competitive backstroke. Mr. Ratcliffe announced that the fastest competitors (not always the winners) would be one of the lucky few that made it to the finals.

The last couple of races (before the finals) were the girls and boys competitive freestyle races. The first out of the two races was the girls race. They dived like dolphins into the water, and raced competitively (in this case, it was OK to be competitive) across the water like a comet. At the end of the race, it was worth the effort to be proud. The boys race was terrifically extreme. Now, they were speeding bullets, speeding through the waves that tried to push them back. When it was over, it was time for that amazing moment: the finals……..

Only the fastest in the competitive races could compete in the finals, so I would be surprised if they weren’t even an inch proud of themselves. This is because all the competitive racers were challenging, every single one of them. The first final was the girls backstroke. They raced faster than I had seen anyone ever before. There was no doubt that the brave racers were talented. They finished in around five seconds. The next race was the boys backstroke. Just like the previous races, they were bold and quick. The following race was the girls freestyle. The girls were incredibly quick and always kept moving. After they finished, there was only one race to go.

The last, and final race of the day was the boys freestyle final. They were lightning through the water and, suddenly, they were complete. This may have been another incredible Swimming Sports, but no-one could doubt it was the last…..

Winter Sports Term 2

Year 4 Sports Term 2

Year 4 has got together and we have started our winter sports like, Soccer, Rugby and Netball, we

started on Hockey. We learnt some new skills like different types of dribbling with Miss Steptoe. Miss Steptoe grouped us into three groups. Two groups were playing a game and the third group was practicing their skills on the other court. We swapped each ten minutes so we all got a turn at everything.

HOCKEY RULES

• Do not swing your Hockey stick over knee height
• We have to use a hockey stick.

HOW TO PLAY

• Defenders have to stay back to defend the goal
• Attackers have to go up and try score a goal against the other team.

We have had lots of fun doing Year 4 Sports together, we also have to wear our sports t-shirts and the sports shorts for boys too.

Wasp Catcher

The bird was like a stick high up in a tree along comes a wasp,a sweet tender wasp

The wasp hovers high squawk   the wasp dives…  thump! The wasp hits a tree owl smiles with glee.

ANZAC writing

When we were doing this piece of writing, we were writing back to our parents from war. A few negative things were included but it was mostly the positive things in it.

Dear mum and dad life has been hard so far. I have made some new friends from different countries they are teaching me their language. We are getting lots of support from our mascot. Baxter the labrador. So he cheers me up quite a lot. I am believing in myself…

Mandarin

Mandarin

Some of the kids have been going to the Chinese group to understand more Chinese.  At Mandarin we revise our colours so if we have a word find we know what colour it is.  Sometimes in Mandarin we get to play games, that helps us remember about body parts and all.

Over the past term Room 22 has been working on body parts for Term 1.  At  Mandarin you learn how to speak Chinese. In mandarin we need to cooperate so we get our work done! In mandarin we have been learning how to write Chinese.  In mandarin we have different actives to do.  Mandarin is helpful so when we take a trip to China we know how to speak Chinese and more

Mandarin is cool !  than one language!

Corban Art Centre Trip

In Term 1 Year 4 had an amazing trip to Corban Arts Centre. Let us tell you about our adventure. We
went in 2 class in a day first lots of kids went was Room 22 and Room 33.

When we arrived, some kind ladies greeted us. They showed us which room to go in and sit on the floor.and they gave us a speech about what we were doing first. We got into buddy's, our buddies traced our
heads around. It tickled a lot and if it didn’t look good we could change it!And then we cut it out
next it was morning tea.

After morning tea we sat down on the floor and the teachers told us something important. We went of to our table and then we started adding facial features,this is when we did all the
work. We had to have lots of layers on body parts. After,They said that you could start doing the
hair. They showed us a model and cardboard.We drew out our hair then when we were happy with the shape you cut them out.then if our cardboard came a part we could go to this table were they could fix it.

When we were finished we got a strip of cardboard with our cardboard we cut a line on both sides.Then we put the cardboard strip at the end. When we were finished we put them on benches and we helped others. then at the end the teachers took a photo.

ANZAC ART

ANZAC ART
This year we have been writing about Anzac.  We have been writing from the perspective of a soldier in war writing a letter to friends and family.They have been scrunched up, teared and smudged with dirt to make them look old.
Our ANZAC art has been displayed both in the Meadowbank  library and Room Twenty-Two. You can visit the library to see our ANZAC art. Our ANZAC art will be displayed too.
We dyed our art with red , orange and yellow dye.We cut out black silhouettes of grave stones , hills and doves to represent the war ending. We cut out and collaged big red poppies to go on our hills.

 

1st Day of 2016

Day 1 went as quickly as it came, and everyone agreed at the end of the day that it just flew by! 

The students settled back into school exceptionally well and got off to a fantastic start!  They worked quickly and efficiently to get their stationery sorted.  While designing tray labels there was lots of discussion about the holidays and lots of connections were made of what people had done and places they had visited.  

        

Mr Ayson dropped in to welcome everyone back and gave us a mini NZ geography lesson about the 3 islands.  He linked this to the Maori Legend of Maui.  While visiting the library we borrowed the a book to learn more about 'Te Ika a Maaui'.  Check out his quick 2 minute drawing of NZ on our whiteboard!

After lunch Mr Ayson returned with some visitors, they are the new Mandarin assistants who will be working in NZ schools.  We will meet our new one when we visit Miss Ko next week.  Room 22 taught Miss Steptoe to say goodbye!

We read the story 'The Tree Hut Treaty' and discussed the Treaty of Waitangi.  As a class we came up with some great promises that will become the Treaty of Room 22.  Tomorrow we will have a signing session to pledge our promise.

 

Later we worked on creating 'Henna Hands' to be used for our 'Helping Hands' jobs around the classroom.  We looked and discussed henna designs used in Indian culture.  Look out for these on display on the whiteboard each week. 

     

We finished the day with a fun cooperative game using the parachute, it was called 'Shaking Hands'
